Dangerous Pool Parasites on the Rise

I’m Gabe Garza with today’s health news. You
may want to consider this before you dive in: a deadly parasite that thrives in swimming
pools and hot tubs is on the rise in the US. According to a new report from the CDC, outbreaks
of illness in pools, hot tubs and lakes throughout the US have been increasing in recent years
as a result of a parasite called Cryptosporidium. According to the CDC, the parasite drills
tiny holes in the small intestine, causing diarrhea after it has invaded the body. Between
2011 and 2012 more than 1,700 people were affected by the parasite, and 95 of these
cases resulted in hospitalization. The CDC recommends taking a shower before swimming
and avoiding swallowing the water.
