How to Treat Restless Legs Syndrome : Exercise Tips for Treating Restless Leg Syndrome

Hello my name is Dr. Susan Jewell and on behalf
of Expert Village today I’m going to talk to you about how to recognize and treat a
condition called Restless Leg Syndrome. In this clip I’m going to talk to you about certain
things that you can do at home, in the privacy of your home, to reduce the chances of you
getting this condition. Now we know that with Restless Leg Syndrome there are many contributing
factors to get it and one of them is stress and anxiety. One of the things you can do
is to do pilates or yoga or any sort of form of exercise that will help you to relax and
also to reduce stress but also to reduce the tension in your body, specifically for Restless
Leg Syndrome, the lower half of your body from your waist and downwards. So here are
some exercises, I’m on the pilates mat and you can buy this readily at any health food
or exercising store very cheaply, and what you can do is throughout the day if you are
able to you can find the space and you can do some leg exercises. You can lie down on
your side and what you can do is just really give a good stretch and raise your legs, raise
and exercise, you can change the positioning of your legs, anything that would relax the
muscles, reduce the tension, and increase the circulation flow. Another one that is
good is also to do the leg bending cycling which is very good. These are ways and things
that you can do very quickly maybe 15 minutes or so during the day because Restless Leg
Syndrome occurs more frequently at night time so that will reduce the chances of you getting
that. Another thing to do is in pilates or what you can do is stretching exercises and
this is a stretchy fabric that you can buy and with this you can do leg exercises for
example here you can just use this as a way to really give your lower extremities a really
good work out and these are just ways to reduce the stress and tension.

  1. I've got RLS bad and have been up everynight for the past week, pacing the house. The only way i can get some relief is to pace around the house – can't lay down, can't sit. So i'm up until about 7 am. In desperation i found a book on the net. It said to stop eating salt. Eat a NO SALT low sodium diet. I'm on my second day, it takes about 2 weeks before you get it out of your system. I even buy water without added salt – it's in everything. Hoping it works for me.

  2. I suffered from R.L.S for a year. The one thing that helped me was the Candida diet. No sugar no carbs . If you crave the same foods every day containing sugars or starches, You could have a case of Systemic Candidiasis.

  3. I got it from abilify, and it all went away when i started taking vitamin B6, magnesium, and zinc. Try it, it will go away within 24 hrs.

  4. My doctor told me I had a mild case of this due to my pregnancy. I choose not to take any medication because I do not feel comfortable with taking meds while pregnant but I do try to walk around but sometimes It gets so bad I have to drop to the floor. This once happened as I was walking down the stairs. It was like my legs just gave up on me. Very dangerous situation. I try to lay down much as possible or stay in one area. Good thing I have my bestfriend to massage my legs : )

  5. whats with all these wimpy little leg exercises? I have this, a mild case and im also a bodybuilder. please listen to me and believe me that if you really exercise your legs until they're exhausted and get some serious blood and oxygen flow through your legs your symptoms will be better.start with doing bodyweight squats an hour before bed. if you cant do those hold onto somethin in front of you while you squat. it works just try it! and make those legs too tired to be restless!

  6. So you are going to exercise the legs….to reduce the tightness in the legs???? THIS is why we have so much misinformation out there that's hurting people. Restless legs…..start at your feet……you feel it in the legs….you don't tighten something up that's already tight. STRETCH OUT the legs and calf muscles….that's how you do it.

  7. I think this is rubbish,you really. Don't know what rls is really like, I swim 3 times a week and go to the gym to work on my legs and nothing works only a true sufferer knows this. If it was as simple as this I would have been helped years ago, aside tried everyrxcercise to no avail, so please don't give your opinions til you know what your talking. About

  8. Anyone who actually has RLS or treats patients with RLS will know that exercise is commonly reported as exacerbating the problem. Your advice is terrible and wrong and you should be ashamed for posting it under the guise of an expert's advice. Tell people to get their ferritin checked, instead, for god's sake.

  9. I actually have very bad and diagnosed rls and exercise right before bed is the best natural and instant treatment for me. Stretching just doesn't do it for me.

  10. If this Lady had ever had RLS she would know that these exercises almost never do anything whatsoever. . .

  11. Best thing (works for me anyway) is when it starts, lay down on your back on a bed and lift (exercise) the affected leg (s) high, some 50 times, until the leg is exhausted. It does the trick. For me anyway.
