How Your Gut Causes Brain Fog and How to Fix It

Hi, this is Dr. Ruscio, and let’s discuss
how your gut can contribute to brain fog and, more importantly, how healing your gut can
help to fix brain fog. Brain fog can be a very unpleasant symptom. It’s something that I suffered with myself. It’s a feeling of feeling like you have
slurred speech, like you can’t think, you can’t remember, you can’t speak clearly. Sometimes people can feel a little bit uncoordinated. It’s a very, very unpleasant feeling. And the gut can contribute to brain fog. And improving the health of the gut can help
with reversing that. But how does this all work? So one of the things that may happen—it
was actually shown recently in a study that we’ll put up on the screen here. It was shown that when patients underwent
a low FODMAP diet, they actually saw an improvement in their brain fog. Now, what is a low FODMAP diet? And we’ll also put a link accompanying the
transcript for this video for a low FODMAP diet guide. But essentially, a low FODMAP diet is a diet
that restricts certain types of carbohydrates that feed bacterial growth. And why this can be relevant is regarding
something that we’ve talked much about, which is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. High FODMAP foods can feed bacteria and worsen
a condition known as SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. So, a low FODMAP diet can help starve these
bacteria and help with this SIBO. But how does this tie back into brain fog? Well, here is the interesting finding that
brings us to this most recent study that showed that when putting a group of patients with
IBS, gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, on a low FODMAP diet, these
patients actually saw an improvement in histamine, or a decrease in histamine. Now, histamine is a compound that’s released
by bacteria, and that can cause the feelings of brain fog. In fact, there are many patients that find
relief from brain fog from going on a low histamine diet. And we’ll also put a link to a low histamine
diet guide along with this transcript. Without getting too complicated, if you have
digestive problems—gas, bloating, loose stools, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal
pain, any of these—and you also have brain fog, then improving the health of your gut
can be a great way to see your brain fog alleviated. And going on a low FODMAP diet can be a good
step in that direction, because the low FODMAP diet does not provide a lot of food for bacteria. And if you have too much bacteria, those bacteria
can release a lot of histamine. That histamine can cause brain fog. So a low FODMAP diet starves the bacteria. Less bacteria, less histamine, less brain
fog. So if you’re suffering with brain fog and
digestive symptoms, trying a healthy diet would be a great idea. There are many different types of healthy
diets. A low FODMAP diet in this case, and especially
a low FODMAP diet that’s of high-quality, non-processed foods as the food list we will
provide is, then this may be a really great step toward balancing your gut to help heal
your brain fog. So this is a nice iteration of how the gut
connects to the brain. So this is Dr. Ruscio, and I hope you find
this helpful. Thanks.

  1. Nice concise vid. I have Lyme, 10 years and counting, brain fog and fatigue are my 2 worst symptoms.

I have been writhing in pain on occasion from stomach pain, a pain that is indescribable and comes in waves, also makes me diaphoretic. Blood does come out in stools on occasion.

I'm convinced that my microbiom is a disaster, and I have taken steps to repair my gut.

Question: will an extended water fast reset my gut bacteria? I am more than willing to do this if it will help, as I have become that desperate.

    Thank you.

  11. Dr. Ruscio is perfectly right. Brain fog may have many causes tough I think having a perfect diet is almost impossible. But there is a healthy drug you can make yourself at home and at a very low price. Of course this is not a good thing for most doctors' income. Mix one pound (medio kilogramo) MOLASSES (BLACK STRAP) (melasa negra) with 10 ounces (200 gramos) ground CINNAMON (canela molida). Eat just HALF teaspoon of this preparation twice a day, in the morning and the afternoon, every other day for as long as you think you need it. This homemade remedy kills some parasites and it's a very effective stimulant for your central nervous system and beyond. The effect of this medicine is almost immediate, in five minutes, though you won't notice it. Your mind will feel clearness again. Lazy guys and young male and female students should eat this preparation only once a day three times a week. From Mexico City. This will help you well. I'm an amateur brain-health researcher. This medicine is equivalent to nootropic or a very healthy amphetamine or a super-coffee cup. So you, don't take it before going to bed. But if you do so and you can't sleep, smoke just one marijuana hit (one HIT not one joint) and drink some water. Adding weed to your therapy will help you perfectly and you'll become another person, a very positive person. cheers. Dr. Ruscio's video is very helpful.

  12. I suffer from IBS and the Low FODMAP diet helped me a lot. I suggest adding resisting starch to your diet as well. I see I difference in my mood, thoughts and behavior when I derail on the diet.

  13. Good news! My brain fog healed
after 3 months of rigorous regime. The biggest reason for my brain fog was my leaky
gut. I want to give some information for those who are interested. My focus was
on getting rid of toxins and free radicals out of my brain and body, and
restore my gut health. I have made many changes to my lifestyle and have kept a
comprehensive dairy of how I felt, what I ate etc. so that I can refer back to
it to see which foods cause poblems for me and how certain things (such as
exercise) affect my mood, energy and brain fog. The biggest obstacle that we
face in our health journey is time. Everyone's body is different and the time
that it will take to clean itself will also be different. My biggest advice is
to continue to push forward with your diet, exercise, sleep, and positive
mental state no matter what. Do not let your brain fool you to give up,
continue regardless of whether you feel motivated or not. People who get real
results are those who can push forward regardless of how they feel at the
moment. Drink plenty of water and eat a lot of veggies to help your body get
rid of the nasty stuff faster. I have been consuming half a tablespoon of
turmeric with a pinch of black pepper, a teapoon of omega-3, multivitamin and a
lot of coconut oil on a daily basis. I have also been drinking one glass of
kefir and eating around an ounce of sauerkraut per day to cultivate a helthy
gut flora. I cut out gluten, all the junk food and to a large extent diary. I
have also cut out many foods that are not allowed for those with psoriasis
(such as tomatoes, potatoes etc.). I have cut pretty much all the sugar except
fruits and black chocolate (20 grams per day). I have been drinking american
saffron tea, it has helped immensely to get rid of free radicals in my brain
    and body.

Do not forget that brain fog may be caused by various
reasons. Make a lot of research and write down every suggestion that you hear
and see on a notebook. Keep trying those suggestions until you get your first
results, and believe me, it is very likely that you will get them if you are
willing to make some changes to your lifestyle. The fact that you get any
results is a sign that you are on the right track and that you should continue
to do whatever you are doing. Do not expect miracles on the first weeks or even
months of the regime, although they do happen occasionally. Please make sure
that you stick to your diet, regular sleeping times, exercise and cleansing
(drinking lots of water and eating lots of veggies and fruits) no matter what. You
should also be optimistic about the regime and that it will work. Try new stuff
in addition to those five fundamental things that I just mentioned if you do
not notice any results in the first month. Do not forget that initially your
condition will get worse, and this may last for a number of months depending on
your body. You will experience some relief at times, and sometimes you may feel
amazing, but in many cases your brain fog will return again and again. It is
critical to not give up on those moments. Your body works in cycles, and after
a cycle of cleaning you will feel good. As soon as a new cycle begins, you will
    see your symptoms get worse.

The last point that I want to make is that you should always be easy on yourself and flexible. Do not feel bad and give up if you occasionally stray from your regime, it happens to pretty much every human being on the planet who tries to achieve something big. Start with small steps, and do not try to apply all the changes in one go, because it will suffocate you and you will soon give up. Our bodies are very resistant to change, especially if it comes in a short period of time.

Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions that you have. I hope that this advice changes your perspective on the issue of brain fog. If someone like me could get rid of it, there is no reason why you should not be able to get rid of it too. Cheers.

  18. I have been suffering from Brain Fog since October 2018 and have not cured it. Had a MRI of my brain and blood work and I’m fine. Initially, I though I was suffering from on set of Dementia at an early age. I guess this condition may have started from my gut. I notice that if I eat breads or pasta my condition worsens. I am at a total loss……My doctor thinks I’m over reacting.

  19. it depends though…if your gut's a 'trash can' especially the small bowel, depends how bad the overgrowth is and what toxins are leaking from there…quantity and quality, i've been through some of the worse flares of histamine and fog…when you're really ripped open, my siga was almost nonexistend a year ago…most foods destroy you!
